BNC Berkeley Nucleonics Signal Generator 845 Mini Handheld Cald 30 Ghz 5 Hrs

This is for one like new  bnc 845 -26 (30 ghz) spec’d to 26.5  ghz by oem design.  mini handheld signal generator ranging 100 khz to 30 Ghz!!( With specs to 26.5 ghz)

I bought it thinking it was just a 26.5 ghz range til I was pleasantly surprised! It goes all the way to 30 ghz!!! That’s a crazy rare find for something so small and lightweight!

Then later read that they call it the -26 model because it goes slightly out of spec above 26.5 ghz to 30 ghz range normally.so they only guarantee performance to 26.5 ghz in other words.

Power accuracy is perfect. Everything comes with a new 2 yr cal cert nist traceable. Passes full spec since it has less than 5 hrs runtime .

But now performs quite well.

Please note it requires a special ultra low noise power supply for best performance . I have one I custom made for it. Or buy one from bnc for 100$.

Also for an extra 300$ you can get an even cleaner power supply(a big brick that outputs 120v) thus no line ripple which greatly affects the phase noise performance and spurious  for a little 5 lb toy , this thing rocks pretty hard! Even at 30 ghz!

As you can see there are close in spurs which are as designed according to bnc. I guess it’s the trade off for such close proximity with the internal circuitry in a compact 5 lb lunchpail!  . But it really excels in mid range and far out purity for such a little thing! I’m very impressed!. Just don’t use it for any close-in work and you’ll love it guaranteed!.  The spurs are mainly due to the fan ..I’ll try to add a toroid and a cap onto the fans power supply and see if I can clean things up.ive had success with such a thing in the past. Check back. Meanwhile I’ll be using it a lot in our lab . It’s so handy and hopefully no one buys it soon 😉

This one has less than 5 hours run time! Literally just like new! Still has the protective screen cover as shown!

It’s not perfect as any micro signal generator is that can hit this range but overall it’s  impressive. It has internal pulse modulation, internal am , fm , phase and chirp modulations which is rare to have on these models! It looks like the later made model of the line.

. And it had a fast switching 500us sweep function . In both freq and power sweeps as shown. The interface is a lot bigger and easier to navigate once you train yourself on them, than hittite which only has a knob really!  The newest bncs have touch screen but they run about 20 to 25k$. So this is a steal. Also they make a GUI for it as it’s designed to be connected to PC to operate however also works seamlessly without all that. But for sweeps they told me that’s the way to go.apparently you’re supposed to pre program these and then recall the presets you make on the PC .
